About the UNWTO Education, Training and Knowledge Management Department (UNWTO.EKM)
The UNWTO Education, Training and Knowledge Management Department implements the World Tourism Organization's Program of Work in Education and Training. It also coordinates the activities of the UNWTO Education Council as well as the UNWTO.Themis Foundation with the common goal of achieving tourism competitiveness and sustainability through excellence in tourism education.
Mission
To build the knowledge capacity of UNWTO Members, providing leadership, initiative and coordination in quality tourism education, training and research through public-private partnerships among education institutions and UNWTO Member States.
This is accomplished through the following tasks: Education, Training and Knowledge Management Department
Creation of a worldwide network of knowledge centres, i.e. education, training and research institutions;
Development of knowledge products and services with high added-value, i.e. courses, seminars, think tanks, research initiatives, etc.;
A horizontal network of government officials specialized in matters of tourism knowledge, education and training; and
Implementation of capacity-building programmes for UNWTO Member States.
PRODUCTS & SERVICES
Most products and services of the Education, Training and Knowledge Management in Tourism (UNWTO) listed here are offered through the UNWTO.Themis Foundation.
Based in Andorra, and sponsored by its Government, the UNWTO.Themis Foundation facilitates the administration and management of the tourism education, training and research products and services of the UNWTO.EKM.
These products and services include:
UNWTO.TedQual.
A framework of programmes for quality in tourism education. The UNWTO.TedQual Certification is granted to training and education institutions by means of a quality audit. The TedQual institutions can request membership in the UNWTO Education Council (Affiliate Members). There are also TedQual Seminars (training the trainers) for Member States. More Information
UNWTO.Practicum.
This is a biannual programme for officials from UNWTO member States. It is carried at UNWTO Headquarters for a period of two weeks and includes GTAT.TPS seminars, workshops, technical visits and working meetings with the responsible staff of the Organization.

UNWTO.Themis TedQual Practicum.
A specialized programme for officials from UNWTO member States who are proposed by their Governments as liaisons with UNWTO in matters of education and training. This is carried out in Andorra and at UNWTO Headquarters and is organized by UNWTO.Themis with the support of the Government of Andorra. More Information
UNWTO.GTAT.
Set of programmes designed to improve the performance of teaching and learning in tourism. These include software for examinations and course development, GTAT Courses to improve specific knowledge and/or prepare for exams, GTAT Diagnosis to ascertain strong and weak points in specific subjects, GTAT Exams and GTAT Certification of Proficiency. UNWTO.Sbest Initiative.
A framework for a range of UNWTO Programmes aimed at contributing to excellence in tourism destinations through quality training and education. Programmes include UNWTO.Sbest Training, UNWTO.Sbest Audit and UNWTO Tourism Labour Market Observatory. More Information
UNWTO.SIS Seminars.
Short International Seminars concentrating on a variety of specialized subjects and offered at UNWTO.TedQual Certified Institutions worldwide. More Information
UNWTO.TedProm.
This programme encompasses all those activities aimed at disseminating information about quality in tourism through education, training and research programmes. It grants recognition to and promotes those programmes and activities carried out by UNWTO.TedQual Certified institutions. More Information
UNWTO.Themis Internship.
This is an intensive internship programme for tourism students and recent graduates from UNWTO.TedQual Centres and is carried out at the UNWTO.Themis Foundation in Andorra. More Information
